London Region Mediation Day

LONDON REGION MEDIATION DAY – COMMUNICATION IN ACTION

Ealing Mediation Service and Kingston Friends Mediation were very proud to co-host the first London Region mediation Day in over four years!
This full day event, attended by over 80 mediators, staff and trustees was held on Saturday 22.1.05 at Greenford Community Centre, the home of Ealing Mediation Service, in west London.

Participants came from all across London, from CALM, Croydon, Ealing, Hackney, Hillingdon, Kingston, LAMP, Merton & Sutton, Newham Conflict & Change, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Thamesmead and Wandsworth.

The day started with a gathering of everyone together with introductions from the hosts, Debbie Davey and Paulette Morris, followed by Mediation UK’s guest speaker, Tony Billingshurst.

There was then a game of mediation bingo – a fun opportunity for networking – followed by a choice of morning workshops on such diverse subjects as volunteer involvement in services, peer mediation in schools, restorative justice and competent mediator.

The food at lunchtime (even the caterer was a mediator) was well worth the wait and went down well, offering another opportunity for everyone to mix and share experiences and ideas.

In the afternoon there was a further choice of workshops, including barriers to mediation, tackling hate crimes and future vision of mediation.

At the end of the day there was an opportunity for participants to meet back together and feedback. It was unanimously agreed that London shouldn’t wait another four years to have an event of this kind and that this should be at least an annual event.

Debbie Davey and Paulette Morris would like to thank everyone who attended, for making it such an exciting day, and all the workshop facilitators (Becky from Thamesmead, Dave and Elena from Southwark, Harriet from Merton & Sutton, Marcia from LAMP, Stephen from Wandsworth and Paulette herself) for their hard work preparing for and facilitating on the day.

Feedback will be discussed at the next London Mediation Co-ordinators’ Group on 22.2.05.
